Formed in 1965 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Grateful Dead is known for its eclectic style which fuses elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, the blues, reggae, country, improvisational jazz, and space rock.
The band toured steadily throughout their career, playing more than 2,300 concerts. The band promoted a sense of community among their fans that allowed them to tape their live shows, and in turn their devoted fans followed them on tour for months or years and became known as Dead Heads.
Following Jerry Garcia’s death in August, 1995, the remaining Grateful Dead members decided to disband. Over time these surviving members have been part of numerous reunion concerts with various musicians. The Grateful Dead was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
A number of iconic images are associated with the Grateful Dead, many of which originated as artwork for concert posters or album covers. Our merchandise is inspired by the spirit, music, and culture of the Grateful Dead and was produced for the special exhibition Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum through December of 2012.
