The peace sign is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. It was created by Gerald Holtom on February 21, 1958 at the request of Lord Bertrand Russell, head of the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The symbol was adopted in the United States when a friend of Martin Luther King Jr. began using it during civil rights marches.
The symbol gained widespread notoriety during the weekend of August 15, 1969 when the Woodstock Music and Art Fair was held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York. Thirty-two popular musicians of the day appeared during the weekend in front of nearly half a million concertgoers who spent three days with music and peace on their minds. The event is regarded as one of the greatest moments in popular music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.
Our 12 ounce ceramic mug is microwave safe, but for lasting beauty we do not recommend dishwasher use.
